The Joint Transnational Call (JTC) will be launched under the European Water4All Partnership framework and will support research and innovation projects aimed at improving long-term water security. In line with the strategic objectives of Water4All, the outcomes should contribute to the implementation of evidence-based water management policies and strategies at global, EU, and national levels, within the frameworks of the Green Deal, the Water Framework Directive, the Just Transition, and the UN Water Action Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals. Proposals must take into account relevant legislation and policy frameworks at both national and international levels while addressing the policy actions and governance mechanisms necessary to foster the paradigm shift towards a Circular Economy.
The context for the general themes of the call is described in Theme I of the Water4All Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA): "Water for the Circular Economy: Smart Water Value." Additionally, applicants should consider Themes VI and VII of the SRIA on "International Cooperation" and "Governance," respectively, as these are cross-cutting issues relevant to all other themes. Applicants are encouraged to explore interlinkages between themes as outlined in the EERI.
The general theme of the call is "Water for the Circular Economy."
Research & innovation proposals submitted under the 2024 Water4All Joint Transnational Call must address at least one of the following topics:
Topic 1: Enhancing water circularity in industries.
Topic 2: Urban water circularity.
Topic 3: Resource recovery and valorization.
Topic 4: Economic, environmental, and social implications of water reuse and recovered products.
IMPORTANT: Applicants should note that not all descriptors included in the EERI "Water in the Circular Economy" theme are eligible for the 2024 Joint Transnational Call. The use of water for hydroelectric generation, cooling in power plants and industry, and water use in agriculture under Topics 1, 2, and 3 are outside the scope of the call. While health aspects may be considered in risk assessments, issues related to epidemiology and the ultimate fate of pollutants are not eligible for funding.
This Joint Transnational Call will also include an additional modality targeting early-career researchers with a PhD obtained less than 10 years ago. Details of this modality will be published in the Water4All 2024 Call Announcement document during the official launch of the Joint Transnational Call in September 2024.
The following principles are provided for information purposes only; the binding criteria will be detailed in the final call announcement.
Each consortium must consist of a minimum of three eligible partners requesting funding from the participating Associated Funding Organisations in three different countries.
In addition to the above condition, projects must include the participation of at least two independent legal entities from two different EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries as beneficiaries of financial support.
The maximum number of eligible project partners per consortium is 7, including 1 self-funded partner (if applicable).
No more than one self-funded project partner per consortium is allowed.
The consortium coordinator must be eligible to receive funding from a partner funding organisation participating in this call.
Each application must be submitted by a Consortium Coordinator who is eligible for funding from a Partner Organisation in this call.
The Principal Investigator of the entity acting as the Consortium Coordinator may only participate in one proposal (i.e., if the Principal Investigator is the Consortium Coordinator for one proposal, they cannot participate in any other proposal, either as Consortium Coordinator or partner).
The composition of the consortium may be limited by national or regional regulations.
Applications must be submitted by the coordinator. Each consortium participant will be funded by the Funding Organisation of their respective country/region participating in the JTC 2024. Therefore, participants are subject to the eligibility criteria of their national/regional funding organisations.
